Night Construction Activities

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is in its fourth season of constructing the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge and State Route (SR) 16 between Jackson Avenue and 36th Street NW. Although most construction will take place during daytime hours, work also will occur at night.

Telephone Hotline (253) 620-4440. Staffed 24 hours a day, this telephone hotline is available for the public to report comments or concerns related to night construction noise. Operators take calls and forward them to staff. If a response is requested, Tacoma Narrows Bridge staff will follow up the next work day. When project construction activities are taking place, operators will be able to contact project staff immediately. If a caller requests an immediate response during off-work hours, staff will be notified to return the calls as soon as possible. Activities are subject to change due to unforeseen factors including inclement weather. Be sure to check the hotline for schedule revisions.

Construction activities that may occur between the hours of 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. are as follows:

Deck Installation:
Work crews will continue installing deck sections. The TEAL, an ocean-going cargo ship, will soon deliver 15 more deck sections to the Narrows. As with its sister ship the SWAN, the TEAL will anchor below the west span of the new bridge between the west bridge tower and the Gig Harbor shoreline. Lifting the deck sections occurs during slack tide in the Narrows, thus deck-lifting operations may occur between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Deck assembly will continue through the end of 2006. Equipment: tower and gantry cranes, winches and welding equipment.

Existing Bridge: Temporary single-lane night closures may occur on the existing bridge so crews can continue seismic
retrofit work on the existing structure. Equipment: traffic control trucks.

Roadway: Roadway crews are grading areas around Jackson Avenue in Tacoma. This work is in preparation for paving the
future eastbound lanes on the east side of the bridge. Equipment: trucks, pavers, rollers.

Scheduled activities for January - March 2007
