Bike and Pedestrian Information about New Narrows Bridge

  • New bike and pedestrain route across new bridge. Will bikers and pedestrians be able to use the new bridge?
  • Yes in fact, they will have their own facility. The new bridge was designed wide enough to include a 10-foot barrier-separated bike/pedestrian facility on its south side. It will be available soon after the new bridge opens to traffic. There may be a slight delay in opening that facility even after cars are on the new bridge depending on construction progress and whether crews have installed the pedestrian railing along the walkway.

Until the bike/pedestrian facility is open, bikers will continue to use the sidewalks on the existing bridge. Once the new bike facility is opened, the sidewalks on the existing bridge will be closed to both pedestrians and bikes.

  • Bikers stop to take picture on Tacoma Narrows BridgeWhat route will they take to cross the bridge?
  • Crossing the bridge via the bike/pedestrian facility will be very similar to what it is today. On the west side, bikers will use the Cushman Trail to 14th Avenue, then across the 24th overpass and down the shoulder of the 24th eastbound on-ramp to the toll plaza, then onto the bridge. On the east side, bikers will use a separated bike path that parallels the Jackson eastbound exit. From there, they will cross Jackson, ride through Tacoma's War Memorial Park and join city streets.

  • Will WSDOT charge bikers or pedestrians a toll to cross the new bridge?
  • There are no plans to charge a toll to bicyclists or walkers.
