Finances & Schedule

In the nearly four years since the Washington State Department of Transportation began construction of the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge, the overall project is more than 80 percent complete. The $849 million project consists of constructing a parallel suspension bridge, improving 2.4 miles of roadway on State Route 16, and retrofitting the adjacent 1950 bridge. The new bridge will open to traffic in summer 2007 with both bridges opening in their final form by spring 2008. When the project is fully completed, the existing bridge will carry westbound SR 16 traffic (to the Peninsula) while the new bridge will take vehicles eastbound on the corridor (toward Tacoma).
