Construction Web Cameras

East Anchorage:Until January 2007, large equipment spanned the bridge's main suspension cables seen here. These 'lifting gantries' operated with winches powered by diesel-fueled electric motors. The camera is set near the east anchorage, which is a 90-million pound concrete block that serves as a counter weight holding the cable ends. Inside the anchorage, the steel wires of the 20.5-inch cable are separated or "splayed" into 19 strands to ensure the even and safe distribution of the load. When the new bridge is complete, the roof of the east anchorage will connect seamlessly with the bridge deck and become a part of the driving surface. A sister anchorage also sits on the west shoreline of the Narrows.
